If I Could Buy Only One – September 21st Vintages Release
We asked our writers, “If you could buy only one wine from the September 21st release, which one would it be and why?”
Tawse Growers Blend Cabernet Franc 2020, Ontario, Canada
$29.95, Tawse
John Szabo, MS – If I’m buying only one for this cool autumn weekend, I’m looking directly at the Tawse Cabernet Franc Growers Blend from the terrific 2020 Niagara vintage. It’s showing beautifully now with its own autumnal appeal, and also shows just how well this classic variety does in southern Ontario, arguably the most consistent red grape grown in the province (I would not argue this). I like the mouth-coating structure and the classic flavour line somewhere between the Loire and Bordeaux in style.
La Rioja Alta Ardanza Reserva 2016, Rioja, Spain
$30.95, ROY + CO. SELECTIONS INC.
Michael Godel – La Rioja Alta Ardanza Reserva 2016 is tasted from a half bottle which can make a whale of a difference for aged wines, including and at oft times, especially Rioja. The small format accelerates maturity and this ’16 is not immune to such a process with dried fruit, earthy volatility and that very special feeling that only old Rioja is want to express. The 375 mL bottle makes La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza feel advanced to three or four years of further age, as if this were let’s say a 2012, but that is neither here nor there because the beauty of aged Rioja is exactly this. Still some succulence and more than a fair shake of attitude but also cumulative spice to define a wine well ahead of its time. This is fun and a single consumer can take full advantage of its charms. With so few quality half bottles available, well without a shadow of a doubt this is a singular must buy.
Donatella Cinelli Colombini Brunello Di Montalcino 2019, Tuscany, Italy
$77.95, Le Sommelier Inc.
Megha Jandhyala – If I could buy just one bottle from the latest Vintages release, I would gravitate towards Donatella Cinelli Colombini Brunello Di Montalcino 2019. It is classic, compelling, complex, and concentrated, with a finish that seems to leave an indelible impression on one’s palate. This is a special wine from an exceptional vintage and though it is a bit of a splurge, I would rather spend my money on one memorable wine than several average or even very good ones. In 3-4 years, this Brunello should show even more beautifully, developing nuances of age that will add new dimensions to its vibrant, intense flavour profile.
Vietti Perbacco Langhe Nebbiolo 2020, Piedmont, Italy
$36.95, Noble Estates Wines & Spirits Inc.
Sara d’Amato – With a little more joy and youthful drinkability than a Barolo or Barbaresco, this succulent Langhe nebbiolo is juicy, generous, and perfumed. This elegantly packaged value features explosive red fruit, savoury herbs, botanicals, buoyant acids, and impressive length. To have on hand when more discerning guests come to visit.
David Lawrason – It is more expensive than the average Langhe Nebbiolo, but less expensive than the average Barbaresco, which it more resembles. It captures unexpected complexity and detail. It displays a fragrant nose of red cherry, signature rose, cinnamon, leather and underbrush. It is light to medium bodied with juicy acidity, warmth and quite fine yet structured tannin. The length is excellent. Already drinking well, this should last through the decade.
