Re-tasted nearly a year after my first tasting, this is still a superb red. Perhaps the tannin has softened a bit but fresh and going strong. Drink now or hold a few more years.
Original note:
What a classic southern Italian wine. A very complex mix of dried fruits, herbs, ripe red fruit. To me, the tannin still seem quite powerful, though did not detract at all. Love this now, but I think even better in 18-24 months. Glad I bought a second bottle. A steal on sale at $15.75.

The key note here is rusty iron, and this fabulous blend of three distinct local varietals -- Magliocco, Greco Nero, and Nerello -- tastes like the root systems have gone deep to pull the very essence of the earth up into the grapes. There's dried fruit, raspberry and strawberry, as well as ripe cherry and tart currant, but the savoury herbs, earth, lead pencil, and faint aromatic smokiness are what truly appeal. (A slight acetic note even adds to the attractive mix.) It lacks refinement, and could use a bit more fruit, but it's a fascinating Italian red that isn't one of the usual suspects.

Gotta love the honest purity of this wine. Loads of dried red and black fruit with oak driven complexity adding a subtle earthy spiciness. It's super juicy giving it quite a lively palate, and the tannins are very silky offering such a nice mouthfeel. It's just a pleasure to sip and a great addition to the table.
