This is an outstanding southern Rhône red that is a dead ringer for Châteauneuf-du-Pape at twice the price. Very...

Inky sexy and dark. The nose is a beautiful mix of earth and perfume. Starts with some gamey aromas, and then moves on into cedar, blackberry, raspberry and a hint of blueberry. There is also something floral here that makes me think of warmer days. I think of blackberries when I take my first sip - not the kind you get in the grocery store, but cool, sweet and dense, picked from a bush in the back 40 somewhere. Silk turns to velvet as the tannins kick in, and there’s a really nice complexity here. I’m still thinking blackberry, raspberry, a hint of blueberry. The midpalate brings a little savouriness - roasted nuts, and some green and mineral notes.

This has come along nicely. Dense nose of stewed prunes, herbs, tar, raisins, Christmas/baking spice and some volatile alcohol fumes.

Full bodied, lots of black fruit, quite herbal (almost a Jagermeister hint), a bit of smoke and plenty of hot, heady alcohol. At 15% this needed to be dense in order to achieve some balance.

This reminded me of a mid-priced Chateauneuf du Pape blended with an Amarone.

This will hold for years, but I don't see it improving much. It will mellow, but I like it's vigour. I have some '06s as well and the 09's are out now, curious how they will compare.
