Consistently rated among the best Islay whiskies, I finally picked up a bottle. I once had a special edition bottle of Lagavulin aged in Sherry casks and it was heavenly, so I thought I was up for an Islay. I was wrong. The sherry maturation of the special ed Lag greatly toned down the peatiness. Ardbeg is a true Islay and is a very peaty dram. The strong medicinal/antiseptic/cresol nose/flavours are overpowering. Not tasty. I have come back to it every few months hoping that my taste might have changed, but I still can't drink it. But peat lovers will love it.
