Deep violet. Powerful kirsch and plum jam aromas are sweetened by vanilla and mocha, with an exotic rose pastille accent. Lush and creamy, with warm dark berry and cherry preserve flavors gaining ripeness and a light roasted meat character with air. Rich, deep and full through the finish, which features firm, youthful tannins. This shows the vintage but also possesses impressively fresh fruit. Score - 90. This is a solid Rioja. Medium to full bodied with good black fruit and some vanilla, though not over powering. The Spanish have a way of getting it right and this Reserva is a fine example. I served this magnum to our guests one night while my wife and I sipped the reserva's big brother the 1970 Castillo Ygay - what they don't know won't hurt them...
