Mencía is such an interesting grape. It seems that even within Bierzo itself it can vary a lot, showcasing great sensitivity to factors like altitude or sunlight or ripeness, etc. This wine is very enjoyable, and the medium to full body and dark fruit in the nose are somehow reminiscent of a Nortern Rhône Syrah.
I recommend you drink this with something with mushrooms and/or pepper. Nice little treat and great value as well. Decant for a couple of hours if you can manage.
Light to medium body with hints of an unusual but pleasant taste
Steal at the price, John nailed it (as always). One release only? A shame. Bye bye birdy.
Smoky dark fruit, spice and pepper. Not as big as I was expecting, but that is no flaw. Enough tannin to provide backbone and I like the crisp acidity on the finish. Worked really well with a meat-tomato based pasta dish. Fine Mencia and an excellent value at under $16 on sale....still some left, worth a try for sure. Tasted Feb 2019.
